Two Saharas to Choose From
Morocco has two famous dune fields, both reachable from Agadir by rental car. They're very different experiences:
- Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) — taller, more iconic dunes. ~12 hour drive (better split into 2 days via Ouarzazate).
- Erg Chigaga (M'Hamid) — wilder, less touristy. ~8 hour drive via Ouarzazate then Zagora.
Recommended Route: Agadir → Erg Chebbi (3-4 days)
- Day 1: Agadir → Marrakech (3h, A7 motorway) → night in Marrakech
- Day 2: Marrakech → Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka pass (4h) → night in Ouarzazate or Aït Ben Haddou
- Day 3: Ouarzazate → Merzouga (5h via Dades and Todra gorges) → camel ride and overnight in desert camp
- Day 4: Sunrise on the dunes → drive back via the same route or fly out from Errachidia/Fes
Which Rental Car for the Sahara
All routes to the dune entry points are asphalt today, but two things push the decision toward SUV/4x4:
- Tizi n'Tichka pass: 2,260 m mountain pass with real elevation. An SUV climbs it more comfortably than an economy.
- Last few km to camp: can be loose gravel/piste — Dacia Duster or Hyundai Tucson handles it; a Sandero won't.
- Best SUV pick: Dacia Duster — cheapest 4x4-capable option in our fleet, tough, fuel-efficient.
- More comfort for the 12h round trip: Hyundai Tucson or Kia Sportage — automatic gearbox available.
- Family + luggage + camp gear: Škoda Kodiaq (7 seats + AWD) — the desert-family setup.
- Don't take an economy Sandero/Sandero Stepway on this trip — Atlas pass + gravel are outside its comfort zone.

Important Tips
- Don't drive the dunes themselves with your rental car — use camels or 4x4 tours from the camp.
- Fuel up at every opportunity — stations are sparse east of Ouarzazate.
- October-April is the best season. Summer Sahara is brutally hot (50°C+).
- Always carry water, snacks, and a fully charged phone with offline maps.
- For a 4-day trip you don't want €1,500 blocked on your card — see our no-deposit Agadir rental.
Combine the Sahara with Other Destinations
The Sahara route naturally passes through several highlights — extending your trip 1-2 days adds a lot:
- Gateway on the way out: Marrakech is the standard overnight stop between Agadir and the desert (day 1 or day 4).
- Coastal decompression on return: Essaouira is the perfect wind-and-fish counterpoint to the dry desert (~4h from Marrakech).
- Short pre-desert warm-up: Taghazout for a surf sunset the night before you fly home.
